On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The new figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
