British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
